The 3D printing industry is moving to a worldwide scale where entrepreneurs are starting to realize not just the market that it can offer but also the unique services that come along with it. Scottish mechanical engineer Daniel McGuire receives 3D business mentorship to help solve some of his startup issues, like how to put value in his time and how to come up with short term goals to make him visible in the market. His mission is to make the everyday person realize what this industry can do for … [Read more...]
It’s FFF, Only Metal: 3D Metal Machines with Melanie Lang of FormAlloy
Fused filament fabrication has found its genius little sister in the form of laser metal deposition. The process builds parts layer after layer using the heat of an integrated blue laser. This allows Melanie Lang and FormAlloy to use a shorter wavelength than IR lasers which then allows for a wider range of material processing. Their blow powder system and modular powder feeders allows them to use different materials on the fly. With this technology that was inspired by aerospace … [Read more...]
Design Challenge Accepted: 3D Printed Mens Shoes with Philippe Holthuizen from FUSED Footwear
For some people, seven months of product design is barely enough time to build a single feature. But Dutch product designer Philippe Holthuizen managed to disrupt the footwear industry with his 3D printed mens shoes in that time frame. Phillippe was able to achieve a lot in design and development from styles to texture using his 3D CAD skills and background in shoe designing. But his bottom line goal is pretty much the same as other 3D print product designers; to become part of the … [Read more...]
Transformable Filament Spools Project
I love this project of transformable filament spools because about a month ago I had a dozen empty filament spools, and I went to throw them in the recycling bin because I didn’t have anything else I could do with them. I was trying to think of a project, something I could make out of them, and I didn’t really have the time. They didn’t have any recycle symbols on them, so I hope they got recycled but I don’t really know. So when we saw this project, I was excited. Listen to the podcast … [Read more...]
Changing Sports Equipment Design with 3D Printing
3D Printing has already changed the world of sports, most notably at this year's past Super Bowl. Making customized 3D printed objects is something we've touched on many times, but 3D printing has also changed design and they way things are created. From head to toe, there's virtually not a body part that 3D printing hasn't already helped protect when it comes to sports equipment. Listen to the podcast here: Changing Sports Equipment Design with 3D Printing It is no question that sports … [Read more...]
